DECATUR, Ga. – Will Mize and Michael Maginnis each drove in three runs and five other Georgia State players drove in two apiece as the Panthers defeated Southern Miss 18-8 in seven innings Friday night in a Sun Belt Conference series opener at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The Golden Eagles (21-13 overall, 8-5 Sun Belt) collected 10 hits and belted four home runs but could not overcome surrendering six-run frames in both the first and third innings.
Southern Miss starter Niko Mazza gave up 10 runs on seven its over two-plus innings and walked four with two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 5-2.
Slade Wilks gave the Golden Eagles an early lead after homered deep to right in the first for his eighth of the season and 40th of his career, moving him into 10th place by himself on the Golden Eagles all-time list. The Panthers answered by getting their first six batters in the bottom half to reach base and score and take a 6-1 advantage after a frame.
Lawson Odom, who led the Golden Eagles with four RBI, hit his first home run of the season in the second – a two-run shot – to cut score to 6-3, before GSU scored six more runs in the third to push the visitors' deficit to nine runs.
The Golden Eagles then put together a three-run fourth. After a leadoff walk to Billy Butler, pinch runner Matthew Russo went to second on a Davis Gillespie single, his second of the game, before both going into scoring position on a wild pitch. Odom then doubled in both runs with a smash to right.
Southern Miss also got solo home runs from Nick Monistere in the seventh, his fifth, and Russo in the eighth, his first of his career, but the Panthers scored four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to capture the 10-run rule decision.
Golden Eagle leadoff hitter Dalton McIntyre increased his hitting streak to 10 games as he improved his SBC-leading batting average to .432.
Brian Garmon, the second of three GSU pitchers, gave up a run on three hits with no walks and a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings to earn the victory and improve to 2-2 on the year. GSU improved to 17-16 and 8-5.
The series continues with a 2 p.m., CT contest Saturday.
