Softball Prepares for Road Series At Troy

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (14-16, 3-3 Sun Belt) faces a series against Sun Belt opponent Troy (24-11, 4-2 Sun Belt), starting Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Troy Softball Complex.

The Golden Eagles are following its first home conference series win in the Sun Belt Conference, which came this past weekend with two wins against Marshall.
After dropping the first match Friday 6-3, Southern Miss rebounded for a 6-3 win and took the rubber match 8-5 Sunday for its first series win against the Thundering Herd since 2010.

Southern Miss Notables
- Graduate student catcher Hannah Borden broke the program's home run record in dramatic fashion, hitting her 42nd career home run on a grand slam on the first pitch of her at-bat. The play marked the team's first grand slam of the season and shattered the program record in 19 fewer games than the previous record holder, Megan Hill. Borden continues her hot start to the season, leading the Sun Belt with ten home runs and 31 RBI. Borden enjoyed a career-long 16-game hitting streak earlier this season and already has 38 hits, just eight shy of her personal best.
- Designated player Jana Lee was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week for her performance in week seven. Lee led the Golden Eagles with eight hits, producing two in each game. Lee hit three doubles in the week and also launched a three-run homer against Marshall on Sunday for her second home run of the season. Lee's .533 batting average in four games last week paced the team and improved her season average to .350. Lee also earned her second win of the season in the circle on Sunday. The Albany, Ga., native fanned seven batters through three appearances in the circle last week.
- Southern Miss continued to draw walks with a total of 21 in four games last week. Borden led the team with five walks, while four Golden Eagles drew three walks, including graduate student Mikaila Fox's career-high three against Marshall on Saturday. As a team, Southern Miss has drawn 109 walks this season, trailing only Troy with 130.
Scouting Troy
- Troy is led by second-year head coach Eric Newell, who has posted a 57-30-1 record with the program.
- Troy enters the week 24-11 and 4-2 in the Sun Belt after picking up consecutive wins against James Madison at home last weekend. After falling to James Madison Friday 3-2, the Trojans outscored the Dukes 14-2 the next two games to take the series.
- The Trojans lead the Sun Belt with a .321 batting average, producing nearly 300 hits in 35 games with 221 runs scored. Troy's 130 walks and 35 home runs also lead the conference.
- Jade Sinness and D'Aun Riggs lead the team with 42 hits apiece, which rank third in the conference. Sinness is tied with Borden's conference-high of 31 RBI and has produced nine doubles and seven home runs this season, along with the second-most walks in the conference (21). Troy's Audra Thompson's 22 walks are the most in the Sun Belt, while Taylor McKinnney's 16 is the third-most.
- Haley Pittman threw her second complete game of the season in an 8-0 shutout of the Dukes, tying a career-high of six strikeouts, while allowing just four hits and no walks. Libby Baker leads the Troy pitching staff with a 10-5 record, throwing 87.2 innings, and allowing 72 hits to 42 earned runs with 41 strikeouts.
