MOBILE, Ala. – It wasn't easy on Saturday afternoon for the Golden Eagles, but Southern Miss (6-4, 2-0 Sun Belt) men's tennis clawed back to beat South Alabama (6-8, 1-2 Sun Belt) 4-3 in Mobile. The win moved the Golden Eagles to 2-0 in Sun Belt action.
"I am so proud of this team for their fight today," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We got down and we never really felt out of the match. Henry has played well all season and today he continued that with clinching the win for us."
South Alabama took an early lead when it handily won the doubles point. The Jaguars won 6-3 on court one over Dakotah Bobo and Henry Lamchinniah, then secured the point with a 6-1 win over Pasawee Reansuwong and Shamirul Shahril on court three.
The Golden Eagles fell behind even more when Olle Noltorp opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 loss on court five. Southern Miss finally got on the board when Shahril picked up his first singles win this season after beating Rostislav Halfinger, 7-6(7-3), 7-5. Despite the win, South Alabama went up 3-1 after Olimjon Nabiev fell in three sets on court three.
With its backs against the wall, Southern Miss stormed all the way back thanks to an initial win from Reansuwong on court six. He beat Theo Mottier 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on court six to make it 3-2 in favor of South Alabama. Bobo then tied the match with a three-set win on court one over Jack Clements. Tied at three-all, the match came down to Lamchinniah and Braden Hannig on court four. Lamchinniah took the first set via a 6-4 win, but Hannig handily won set two 6-1. The Golden Eagle freshman, though, took set three in dramatic fashion with a 7-6(7-5) win.
