HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball suits up for its final contest of the 2023-24 regular season. The Lady Eagles head to Lafayette, La., to take on the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns as one of two games between Southern Miss and Louisiana in the Cajundome. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
Game 29 | Southern Miss (17-11, 10-7 Sun Belt) at Louisiana (14-13, 9-8 Sun Belt)
Friday, March 1, 2024 | 5 p.m. CT
TV: ESPN+ | Dan McDonald (PxP) and Scott Brazda (Color)
Radio: Southern Miss Sports Network (92.7 FM) | Jason Baker (PxP)
Cajundome (12,362) | Lafayette, La.
LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss improved to 17-11 on the season and secured no less than the sixth seed in the Sun Belt Tournament with a 67-59 win over Texas State. Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) moved into the top 10 all-time scoring charts with 22 points, all coming in the second half, to outscore Texas State 28-10 in the fourth quarter.
Davis was joined by Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.) and Noelani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y.) in double-figure scoring. Texas State led by eight halfway through the third quarter but a 15-0 Southern Miss run to start the fourth quarter sealed the win for Southern Miss. Davis gave Southern Miss its first 11 points of the quarter to singlehandedly take the lead.
ABOUT LOUISIANA
The Cajuns are a defense first, offense later program. Head coach Garry Brodhead is the owner of a 199-164 overall record in 12 seasons in Lafayette and is the architect of a hard-nosed defensive style. The Cajuns lead the Sun Belt in defense, allowing just 59.3 points per game and forcing an average of 17.41 opponent turnovers per contest as well.
Louisiana enters the day 14-13 overall and 9-8 in Sun Belt play. Southern Miss previously bested UL one month to the day of this meeting, winning 55-48 on Feb. 1 at Reed Green Coliseum.
THE LOUISIANA SERIES
Southern Miss has dominated the overall series between the two. Friday's game will be the 20th matchup between the two programs with Southern Miss owning a 16-3 advantage so far. The Lady Eagles have won the last 11 games of the series with the Cajuns' last win coming in 1984, when Joye Lee-McNelis was still Joye Nell Lee and a senior for the Lady Eagles.
AFTER THIS
With the regular season over, the whole of the Sun Belt Conference makes its way to Pensacola, Fla., for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Lady Eagles will begin play on Wednesday, March 6, as either the five-seed or, most likely, the six-seed. A ULM loss to Texas State and Lady Eagle win will give Southern Miss the five, but all other possibilities will put Southern Miss at No. 6.
The Lady Eagles will await their opponent and should have a 5 p.m. CT tipoff at the Pensacola Bay Center.
