Softball Drops First Match of Bulldog Invitational to Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (5-9, 0-0 SBC) fell to Mississippi State 9-0 Thursday night in the opening day of the Bulldog Invitational at Nusz Park.
The Bulldogs decided the game in five innings, scoring three three-run innings while pitcher Josey Marron earned her fifth win of the season, throwing a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts. Southern Miss starting pitcher Loganne Stepp received the loss.
The Golden Eagles started the game with early momentum, as Hannah Borden singled through left field and Natalie Taylor reached first base on a fielding error. However, Marron stranded both on base with a strikeout to end the frame.
At-bat, Mississippi State plated four hits and scored three runs in the first inning, and followed with a three-run home run from Nadia Barbary in the bottom of the second.
Freshman BrookLynn White came in relief of Stepp in the second inning and retired the side, notching her first strikeout of the game.
State added three runs with an RBI single from Paige Cook and two-RBI double from Salen Hawkins in the bottom of the fourth. Southern Miss looked to extend the game as Shelby Allen reached base on a single, but two consecutive putouts ended the match.
Allen and Borden produced Southern Miss' three hits for the game. Borden recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season with two singles against the Bulldogs.

The Golden Eagles will play two games tomorrow, beginning with a match against Samford at 12:30 p.m. and concluding the day with a 5:30 p.m. contest versus Alcorn State.
