Softball’s Ten-Run Seventh Inning Completes Comeback Against Samford
3/1/2024 8:20:00 PM | Softball
The Golden Eagles' 17 runs tied a record for the sixth-most runs scored and the team's 13 walks were the third-most in a single game in program history. In total, the game's three hour and nineteen minute duration fell just nine minutes short of the longest regulation game in Nusz Park history.
Southern Miss tied a season-high of 13 hits, led by the trio of Shelby Allen, Natalie Taylor and Hannah Borden, who produced a combined 11 hits. Allen and Taylor led the Golden Eagles with a career-high four hits and four RBI, while Borden followed with three hits, three RBI and three walks.
Both teams battled through a total of five lead changes, exchanging leads after being tied at one apiece through three innings.
The Bulldogs struck first with an RBI single from Katie Campbell in the first inning and Southern Miss tied the game in the third as Allen worked across the bases, hitting a single and then stealing second. Taylor sent Allen home on an RBI double to get the team on the scoreboard.
While Samford registered two early outs in the top of the fourth, the Golden Eagles plated two runs as they mounted four walks in the frame. Allen executed a bunt to score Ryanna Valdivia, and with the bases loaded, Taylor drew a walk to send Maria Smith home.
The Bulldogs shortly took the lead back, as Linsey Hargis and Ansley Yantis hit consecutive sacrifices to capitalize a three-run inning. But the Golden Eagles worked with two outs in the following inning, as Allen fielded another single to score Valdivia again. With the bases still loaded, Borden batted in two runs with a single to center field. Taylor capped off the inning with another RBI single.
However, the Bulldogs responded with four runs of their own to reclaim the lead again, firing four hits and capitalizing on two Southern Miss errors. Samford added three more runs to take an 11-7 lead headed to the final inning.
Freshman Ansley Hight started the scoring outburst with her first career hit on an RBI double. Southern Miss plated its next two runs on a throwing error and then scored on a wild pitch.
Kinsley Gordon batted in two runs with a single, followed by another RBI single from Borden. Taylor added a final run with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs added four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a final fly out to centerfield ended the match.
Marissa Frederick earned the win and BrookLynn White earned her first career save in the victory.
