Game One: Belmont 5- Southern Miss 3
The Golden Eagles started the day trailing Belmont 2-0 in the afternoon contest after the Bruins scored on a two RBI single in the second inning.
While Southern Miss matched Belmont's seven total hits, the Golden Eagles never found a lead in the match as they fought to surmount the early deficit.Â
Junior pitcher Marissa Frederick earned the loss in the match. In her first start and appearance with the Golden Eagles, Frederick allowed six hits, four runs, while striking out one batter in two innings pitched.
Southern Miss answered in the third inning as Kayla Agner earned her first career single. Shortly after, shortstop Nealy McManus belted her first career triple to send Agner home and plate the first run of the game for the Golden Eagles.
However, Belmont added onto its lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, as BrookLynn White came in for relief of Frederick. The Bruins increased its lead in the frame to 4-1 after a SAC bunt.
Agner delivered again in the fifth inning-this time with her first career home run on a solo shot sent over the left field line. Belmont closed the gap again in the following frame with another RBI single.
Pinch hitter Amayiah Hall gave Southern Miss an opportunity in the top of the seventh with a triple in her first career at-bat. McManus earned her second RBI of the match with a single that sent Hall home.
Belmont's Emma Summers registered a final strikeout to round up her complete game and earn her second win of the season.
Agner and McManus paced the team with two hits, and along with Hall's one hit, graduate student catcher Hannah Borden and junior designated player Jana Lee also scratched a hit in the match.
Game Two: Samford 16-Southern Miss 0 (5 Inn.)
Southern Miss fell to a hot-hitting Samford team that mounted multiple runs in each of the match's five innings to close the day.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' pitcher Jordyn Partain pitched through the entirety of the match to earn her first win of the season, holding the Golden Eagles to one hit and striking out five batters.
Borden found the only hit of the match with a leadoff single in the fourth inning, but was stranded on base.
Holly Craft earned the loss for Southern Miss in two innings pitched, while Frederick and BrookLynn White pitched in relief.
Freshman Emily Chandler made her first career appearance as a pinch hitter along with sophomore Maddie Moody, who made her first appearance of the season.
