HATTIESBURG Miss. – The Southern Miss indoor track and field squad travels to Birmingham, Ala., Monday and Tuesday, at the Brimingham CrossPlex to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
This will be the second year the Golden Eagles have participated in this event. In the inaugural showing the women's squad finished ninth and the men placed sixth.
The Golden Eagles look to better on both of those finishes this year as they have enjoyed some fantastic individual performances over the winter.
On the women's side, Za'Isha Fraser collected three triple jump titles, including a best leap of 12.77 meters in the Music City Challenge in the team's final regular-season meet. Trinity Benson also has a chance to earn some points in this meet for the Golden Eagles as she won in the last meet with a 7.39 in the 60 meters. She also served as a leg on the 4x400 squad, which posted a school record time of 3:40.47. That time was good enough to finish second in the event.
On the men's side, Kingsley Unorji (Lagos, Nigeria) and jumper De'Aundre Ward both have been standouts for the Golden Eagles. Unorji earned the final Sun Belt weekly track honor by running his best time this winter in the 60 meters race with a 6.66 in the finals of the Music City Challenge. Ward won two Sun Belt field honors this winter for his prowess in the long jump. He waited until his last leap of 7.57 meters for his best jump of the day at the Music City Challenge to propel him into his final standing. Ward won a pair of events during the regular season and did not finish lower than third in any of the four meets he competed.
Also, the 4x400 men's squad of Elijah Berry, Omar Austin, Jacoby Tanner and Javel Fullerton captured a title with a time of 3:13.04.
The schedule gets underway Monday with the field events at 1:30 p.m., with the women's weight throw leading things off. The running events start with the women's mile run at 3:05 p.m.
