
Volleyball Falls Short of Comeback Against Troy

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Volleyball (9-16, 5-8 Sun Belt) rallied late against Troy (11-12, 6-7 Sun Belt) Thursday evening, forcing a fifth set but ultimately fell as Troy secured the final-set victory.
While the Golden Eagles trailed late entering the fourth set after Troy secured consecutive sets, Southern Miss staged a dominant 25-13 performance in the fourth set to extend the match.
The teams traded leads in the deciding set until Troy pulled ahead with a three-point run at 11. The Golden Eagles tied the match at 13, but the Trojans secured match point with a kill and clinched victory with a final block, stopping Southern Miss' late rally.
Troy's Tori Hester led the way for the Trojans throughout the match, registering a season-high 33 kills on 100 attempts, along with 22 digs.
Meanwhile, four Golden Eagles recorded ten or more kills for Southern Miss, led by Sadie McAda's 14 kills. Aysu Dalogullari followed with 13 kills, and Torrey Tkach and Lillie Johnson tallied 10 apiece. Johnson's total set a career-high for the redshirt freshman, also paired with a career-best seven digs.
Defensively, libero Sunni led the team with 26 digs with freshman Kaylee Lowther joining with a career-high 19 digs. Dalogullari and McAda also posted double-doubles with 16 and 18 digs, respectively. Tkach nearly completed a triple double, posting a career-high ten blocks with nine digs.
Southern Miss' attack jumped to an early start to open the game, staging multiple runs for an early five-point lead at the first media timeout. While Troy tied the match at 18, a combined effort from Johnson, Tkach and Dalogullari gave the Golden Eagles a 25-21 set victory.
The Trojans answered in the second set, as Hester erupted for 11 kills. While the Golden Eagles fought back from a deficit and held a three-point advantage late in the match after a pair of kills from Tkach, Troy scored the next 8 of 11 points to take the set 25-23.
The Trojans and Golden Eagles exchanged leads early in the third set, but Troy never let go of its lead past the first timeout when they held a five-point advantage. McAda narrowed the lead to one late in the match, but again, Troy surged ahead in the set. Two kills from Hester and Sara Bates ended the match 25-19.
In a must-win situation, the Golden Eagles responded decisively, maintaining the lead throughout the entire fourth set. Dalogullari and McAda each tallied six kills to force Troy into five sets, cruising to a 25-13 victory.
Although the Golden Eagles carried momentum into the deciding set, Troy outhit Southern Miss, with Hester contributing five kills to secure the Trojans' victory at 15-13.
