WBB Atlantis Update - Day One
11/20/2024 9:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NASSAU, The Bahamas – The Lady Eagles have finally landed in their long-anticipated trip to Paradise – Paradise Island, that is. Home to the Atlantis Resort and the annual Bad Boy Mowers Battle4Atlantis Tournament, Southern Miss women's basketball will spend five days and six nights in The Bahamas' capital city.
The team's day started early at 6 a.m. at Reed Green Coliseum. By 6:45, the team was loaded up and heading to New Orleans' Louis Armstrong International Airport. After some delays, American Airlines flight 4170 to Miami, Fla., arrived at Miami International Airport around 3 p.m. Eastern Time. American 2250 whisked the team from Miami to Nassau with liftoff at 5:15 p.m. and touchdown in Nassau at 5:53 p.m.
After arriving and making their way through customs, the Lady Eagles were greeted by staff from the Atlantis Resort shuttle service. On the way to Atlantis, a local member of the Resort staff said:
"On your first trip to The Bahamas, you are a visitor. By your second – and there will be a second, everyone comes back – you are a Bahamian. We are one big family here."
The Lady Eagles took this to heart as the entire team seemed right at home the second the plane doors opened. Songs, team karaoke in the hotel and a trip to Carmine's Italian Restaurant left the team full in more ways than one.
Southern Miss and Co. will use some time tomorrow to tour the Atlantis Resort and its offerings before hitting the hardwood at Imperial Arena for practice. The Lady Eagles take on No. 18/17 Baylor to open the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 12:30 p.m. CT (1:30 p.m. ET). The game can be viewed on FloCollege with a subscription. The Southern Miss Sports Network will also carry the game on radio.
Celebrating 50 Seasons of Southern Miss Women's Basketball
The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season. Since then, the Lady Eagles have laid out five decades of excellence on and off the court. To celebrate this golden jubilee, Southern Miss women's basketball will host its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, January 18, against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum.
