HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher announced this week the signing of three players for the 2025-26 season, along with another golfer that will be added to the roster this spring.
The signings for the three new players new season are Grayson Davis (Madison, Miss./Germantown HS), Jake Moffitt (Ripley, Miss./Ripley HS) and Filip Sakota (Lugano, Italy/Anchored Education). The player joining the Golden Eagles this spring is Benjamin Fernandez (Asuncion, Paraguay/Glenville State).
Davis helped lead Germantown High to second place in the Class 7A Mississippi State Championship, earning a spot on the Class 7A All-Star team that competed in an event earlier this month. He ranks No. 87 by the Junior Golf Scoreboard, while finishing second in both the 2023 Magnolia Junior Championship and 2023 MGA Greenville Future Tour Championship. He collected a seventh place showing at the 2023 AJGA NW Arkansas Junior. He finished in the top five of Mississippi State Amateur, which was played at Canebrake Country Club, at age 16.
Moffitt led Ripley High to their third-straight Class 4A state golf championship this Fall, earning medalist honors for the third consecutive year. He finished this year's event with a two-day total of 143. Moffitt ranks as the No. 1 overall junior golfer in the state of Mississippi and No. 72 overall in the 2025 class worldwide. He was a USGA Four Ball Qualifier this year and owns a 72.72 tournament average. This past summer he finished second in the Mississippi Junior Amateur.
"Jake and Grayson are ranked as the number one and two 2025 players in Mississippi and top 100 guys in their worldwide class (Jr Golf Scoreboard)," said Brescher. "This in itself is a fantastic recruiting class for our program. We have always placed an emphasis on recruiting home talent. To win the recruiting battle and have both young men join our program is big for Southern Miss Golf. These two guys have a great body of work in junior and amateur golf, we expect them to make an immediate impact on our team."
Sakota, who lives in Italy and was born in South Africa, was a member of the South African national team from 2020-22 and now is a member of the Italian national squad. He recently won the Windhoek Open Championship, going wire-to-wire for the championship. His 2024 tournament average was 73.87.
"Filip is a seasoned veteran who competes all over the world," said Brescher. "Given the amount of experience he has, we expect Filip to add to our depth of talent at Southern Miss. We were hoping to get him to campus this fall but adding him to our spring roster will give us the depth we need to make a run for Sun Belt and NCAA postseason play."
As for Ferandez, who is ranked No. 290 by the WAGR, he will join the squad this spring from Glenville State College after racking up PING Division II All-American honorable mention honors, after also earning PING All-Atlantic Region, Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year, All-MEC First Team and finishing first at the MEC Spring Championship.
"Ben is a very talented player who is coached by one of my former college teammates," Brescher. "He is a proven champion and has done very well against the best players in South America. Also having Ben join us this spring will be huge for our team's ability to make a postseason run."
In 2024, he won eight tournaments in his home country of Paraguay, while also capturing an event in Brazil as well. The Brazil win is considered to be the best amateur event in South America. Fernandez is expected to join the after the Latin American Amateur Championship, which could lead to an invite into The Masters, US Open and British Open.
