Volleyball Brings Home Four-Set Win Over Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Golden Eagles defeated Louisiana in four sets, with Brynn Botkin leading the match with 16 kills. Southern Miss finished with a .261 hitting percentage.
Set one opened with Louisiana earning a three-point run, but the Golden Eagles responded with a kill from Sadie McAda and an opposing error, paired with a block from Torrey Tkach and Hayden Riddle, to gain the lead at 4-3. The Ragin' Cajuns responded with a 5-2 run to make the score 8-5. Botkin added a kill, paired with good defensive calls by Sunni Sheppard, to keep the score close at 9-7. Louisiana maintained consistency, adding two points to keep their lead. Izzy Kronenberg and McAda scored points, cutting the lead to 13-11. Tkach earned a solo block and a kill, paired with two consecutive aces by Kronenberg, to take the lead 15-14. Louisiana responded with a 2-0 run, but kills from Tkach and Botkin, paired with an ace by Lindsey Smith, put the Golden Eagles ahead 19-18, forcing a Louisiana timeout. The Ragin' Cajuns responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead, but a kill from Lillie Johnson tied the score at 22-22. Both teams traded points until an ace from Sheppard sealed the set, 26-24, for Southern Miss.
Set two started with kills from Johnson and Tkach, giving the Golden Eagles an 8-2 lead. Louisiana responded with a 6-1 run, cutting the score to 10-4. Southern Miss answered with a block by Francesca Panunzio and a kill by Botkin, narrowing the score to 10-7. The Ragin' Cajuns posted a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 16-9. Southern Miss fought back with a 3-0 run, including a kill by Madison Baldridge and Louisiana errors. The Golden Eagles then went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. However, Louisiana closed the set with a 3-0 run, winning 25-21.

Aysu Dalogullari checked in and earned a kill to help the Golden Eagles maintain an 18-15 lead. Louisiana answered with a 4-1 run to tie the score at 19-19. Dalogullari, Kronenberg, Tkach, and Botkin earned key kills to take a 24-19 lead, and a kill from Tkach finished the set 25-21.

Botkin led the Golden Eagles with 16 digs. Panunzio and Riddle combined for 47 assists. Tkach finished with five blocks, and Sheppard recorded 34 digs.
Southern Miss resumes conference play in Hattiesburg on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. against South Alabama at the Wellness Center.
