Andre Curbelo Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS - Southern Miss senior guard Andre Curbelo was named the Sun Belt Men's Basketball Player of the Week after notching the second triple-double in program history and also helped the Golden Eagles to a win over No. 19 James Madison last week.

Curbelo's triple-double against Georgia State last Thursday was the first by a Southern Miss player since Ronald Jackson achieved the feat in 1980. The Vega Baja, Puerto Rico native's stat line read 13 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds – his 11 assists were a career high. His assists total was the highest by any Sun Belt player this season and tied for the most by a Jay Ladner player. His historic feat helped Southern Miss to a 79-73 win over the Panthers in the conference home opener.

The Golden Eagle point guard then helped his squad to the first ranked win by a Southern Miss team since Jan. 15, 2011. Curbelo went for 15 points, nine assists and three rebounds in the legendary win. Curbelo averaged 14 points, 10 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game last week. He became the first Golden Eagle to win player of the week honors this season and the first since former Golden Eagle DeAndre Pinckney on Jan. 10, 2023.

Southern Miss will take on ULM on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in Monroe, La. It will then travel to Troy in a meeting slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will air on ESPN+.
