LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Eagles (9-9) fell to 2-6 in Sun Belt play and for the second time in as many games in a 77-70 loss at Troy. The Trojans used second half free throws to make the difference on Thursday night at the Trojan Arena, hitting on 26 of their 34 trips to the line.
The Trojans also owned their offensive glass, bringing down 21 offensive rebounds and 48 total on the evening, beating Southern Miss' 45.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) scored a season-best 34 points on an efficient 11-of-23 performance. She was also 11-of-12 from the free throw line, setting a career high in free throws made and becoming the first Lady Eagle since 2019 to make 10 shots at the charity stripe in a single game.
ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA
The Jaguars enter the weekend 7-13 overall, 0-8 in Sun Belt play and losers in their last 10 matchups, dating back to Dec. 15, 2023. South Alabama is led by first-year head coach Yolisha Jackson, who returns to Mobile after three seasons in Tampa, Fla., with USF. Prior to her work with the Bulls, Jackson coached alongside former Jaguar head coach Terry Fowler for seven years, helping South Alabama to two-straight 20-win seasons and two WNIT berths as well.
The rebuild has been challenging so far. The Jaguars are lagging behind the Sun Belt in many categories, but have made up their ground in the past few week – though the scoreboard may not show it.
South allows opponents to shoot 39 percent from the floor and 29.8 percent from behind the arc, ranking 306th and 295th, respectively. The Jaguars also struggle to hold onto the ball, turning it over an average of 20.5 times per game (332nd nationally) for a turnover margin of -5.75 (339th).
THE SOUTH ALABAMA SERIES
Southern Miss and South Alabama first met in 1976 in Hattiesburg and have since played 27 games against one another. The Lady Eagles lead the overall series 24-13.
South Alabama is Southern Miss' most-played Sun Belt opponent and sixth-most played opponent overall.
Southern Miss and South Alabama have met in 19 of the last 22 seasons due their proximity. The Jags are Southern Miss' third-closest opponent, trailing only William Carey and Jackson State.
AFTER THIS
The Lady Eagles return home for two games at Reed Green Coliseum, opening with a Thursday game against Louisiana.
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Hattiesburg.
