Southern Miss Opens Home Slate With Golden Eagle Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- After starting the season against stiff competition on the road for the first two weeks of the season, Southern Miss (1-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) returns to the Wellness Center in Hattiesburg to play its first home games in the Golden Eagle Classic this Friday and Saturday.
The Golden Eagles won the opening game of the Stephen F. Austin Tournament last weekend in straight sets versus Nicholls but fell short in five sets against Cal Poly and SFA. Now, Southern Miss looks to rebound in front of a home crowd with another match against Nicholls Friday at 7 p.m. and a contest against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
"We are very excited to finally be playing in front of our home crowd," Head Coach Jenny Hazelwood said. "This team has put in so much work, and we see the pieces coming together. We are looking forward to showing the Golden Eagle nation what we are all about this weekend."

- Outside hitters Mia Wesley and Aysu Dalogullari were named to the SFA All-Tournament Team after combining for 75 kills and 80 digs in three matches.
- Wesley ranks second in the Sun Belt for total points and fourth in the conference with 4.04 kills per set.
- Southern Miss led the Sun Belt with 17.46 digs per set last weekend and rank third in the conference with 16.29 digs per set this season.
- The Golden Eagles recorded 91 digs against SFA, which is the second most in a match by a Sun Belt team this season.

Nicholls
- Nicholls (1-5) have dropped four consecutive matches in straight sets, including a 3-0 loss to Southern Miss last weekend.

- The Golden Eagles hit a season-high nine service aces against the Colonels last weekend.
- Freshman outside hitter Autumn Perry leads the Colonels with 49 kills, 10 service aces and 59 digs.
Mississippi Valley State
- Mississippi Valley State is led by first-year Head Coach Assata Conway.
- Mississippi Valley State has won two straight games, including wins in straight sets versus LeMoyne-Owen College and Lane College.
- Southern Miss has won all three of its matches against Mississippi Valley State, including a 3-0 victory last season on Sept. 10, 2022.
