HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Battle for the Bell rivalry game returns to Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium Saturday afternoon when Southern Miss and Tulane meet for the 34th time in their respective football histories.
Game time is set for 3 p.m., and can be seen via ESPNU as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Some tickets still remain for the contest and can be purchased at SouthernMissTickets.com.
This game is the second of a four-game series for the two schools with the final two games set to be played in 2026 (New Orleans) and 2027 (Hattiesburg). Southern Miss snapped a two-game losing streak to the Green Wave last year at Yulman Stadium in a 27-24 victory and hold a 24-9 overall series advantage.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) enter this weekend having defeated Alcorn State 40-14 during the opening weekend, before dropping a 66-13 decision at the hands of No. 4 Florida State in Tallahassee last Saturday.
Tulane (1-1) had been among the Top 25 through the first two ranking periods as they upended South Alabama 37-17 in the season opener. They then fell 37-20 game to nationally ranked Ole Miss in front of a sold-out crowd last weekend and that dropped them out of the Top 25.
Southern Miss running back Dreke Clark, who tallied 86 yards on the ground last weekend at FSU, leads the team this season in rushing yards with 140. Frank Gore, Jr., is next with 60 yards on the ground for the year and 2,951 for his career, which puts him in sixth on the Golden Eagle career rushing chart.
Quarterback Billy Wiles, a transfer from Clemson, has completed 51.6 percent of his passes in two starts and thrown for 421 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Eleven different players have caught passes in 2023 with Jakarius Caston leading the way with seven catches for 127 yards and a touchdown.
The Golden Eagles also enjoy stability on the offensive line as the same group has started in both games and that unit has totaled 84 career starts.
On defense, Jay Stanley leads the way with 10 tackles, to go along with two interceptions, three pass breakups and a forced fumble.
Third-year Southern Miss coach Will Hall has participated in each of the last three games in this series. He was the offensive coordinator for the Green Wave for the 2020 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, capturing a 30-13 decision, and helped Tulane to a 66-24 win over the Golden Eagles the following year at The Rock in a late scheduled game due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also won last year's meeting as the Golden Eagles' head coach.
Following the Tulane game, Southern Miss opens its second season of Sun Belt Conference football when they travel to Arkansas State for a Saturday, Sept. 23, showdown. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
