HATTIESBURG, Miss. – During Will Hall's final question of his media session following Southern Miss' Wednesday morning practice to talk about his team's season-opening opponent, Alcorn State, he couldn't help but crack a smile and feel a sense of pride.
The question posed to him was how good it felt for a pair of in-state schools to get the chance to play each other. The 2023 opener is slated for this Saturday, at 6 p.m., at M.M. Roberts Stadium at Carlisle-Faulkner Field.
"It is awesome," said a thrilled Hall. "For us, for Alcorn, for our fans and our state. We are playing them this year and Mississippi State later in the year and that is awesome for the state of Mississippi in every way. I love Southern Miss the most, but I love this state. I am for Mississippi, and it is great us playing each other."
The pageantry of college football returns to the Golden Eagle campus as fans start the day tailgating to go along with plenty of other entertainment. The band Chapel Hart gets this kicks off this year's pregame concert series starting at 3 p.m. in Spirit Park. Also, both the Pride of Mississippi, and the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite, the Alcorn State band, will also perform during the day.
Getting to Saturday, though, the Golden Eagles went through a two-hour work as they continued to install things for its anticipated opener.
"(It was a) great day for us today and another day to get better," said Hall. "It was a great Wednesday (practice) as we focused a lot on our opponent. We got some good punt-block, goal-line and situational red zone work, which has been a point of emphasis this offseason."
Tickets are still available for that game as well as the final five home games this fall. Fans can contact purchase home season or single game tickets at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or visit the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office on campus weekdays during normal business hours.
