HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss track and field head coach Jon Stuart announced Friday the hiring of Ross Richardson as assistant track coach.
"I am extremely pleased to add Ross to our staff," said Coach Stu. With a remarkable track record of nurturing talent and achieving success throughout his career, Ross brings a wealth of experience to our staff. His expertise in throws and strength and conditioning makes him the perfect candidate to lead our throws group.
Richardson joins the Golden Eagle family after dedicating several years as the throws coach at the University of Missouri since 2018. In his inaugural year at Mizzou, he achieved remarkable results, guiding the throwers to one All-America honor, securing one conference title, and setting 11 program top-10 marks.
Throughout his illustrious 28-year coaching career, Richardson has left his mark at various institutions, including Ohio State, Virginia, Harvard, Purdue, and Miami (Ohio), spanning Division I, junior college, and high school levels. His coaching expertise has yielded impressive outcomes, with six national champions, 20 All-Americans, 23 school records, and one conference record holder being the fruits of his labor.
Richardson's previous five-year tenure at Purdue from 2005 to 2010 saw him excel as the assistant men's and women's track and field coach, earning a well-deserved recognition in 2007 when he received the USTFCCCA Regional Coach of the Year award.
In 1989, he graduated with a degree in sociology from Monmouth College and holds the distinction of being an All-American in both track and field and football during his time there. He later garnered induction into the Monmouth College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. Demonstrating his commitment to continuous improvement, he has obtained USATF Level II certification as a coach in throws and jumps, in addition to being recognized as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by NSCA and USTFCCCA.
