Softball Set for Opening Round of Sun Belt Conference Championships in Lafayette

HATTIESBURG, Miss.— The Southern Miss Softball team (22-23, 6-17 Sun Belt) heads to Lafayette, La., to play in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships against the number seven seed Coastal Carolina (35-19, 11-13 Sun Belt) Wednesday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. central standard time.
This will be the Golden Eagles' first conference tournament appearance in the new conference and first postseason run since 2019 as they fell to UTSA in the opening round 4-2 in the Conference USA-Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Last time out
The Southern Miss Softball team secured their last regular series with a 2-1 win over Georgia State last weekend. In the first inning of the game, Emily Brown hit a single to center field for Georgia State. She then stole second base and scored a run when Jaycee Goodwin hit a double to center field. In the second inning, the Black and Gold team responded to Georgia State's run by scoring Scout Jennings after Georgia State fielding errors. In the third inning, after two singles from Natalie Taylor and Jana Lee, pinch runner Natalie Hurdle scored a run on a sacrifice fly to center field by Maria Smith. Georgia State could not catch up to the Golden Eagles as Morgan Leinstock allowed only four hits, gave no walks, and retired 11 batters. She earned her 13th victory of the 2023 season and came close to her season-high of 12 strikeouts, which she achieved against Kennesaw State in March at the I-75 Challenge in Atlanta. This earned her the final sun belt pitcher of the week honors.
Chanticleer series
Southern Miss and Coastal Carolina played a three-game series in Hattiesburg at the Southern Miss Softball complex, where the Golden Eagles refused the series sweep, winning game three 3-2 on April 23.
