ATLANTA, Ga.— The Southern Miss Softball team (22-23, 6-17 Sun Belt) secured their last regular series with a 2-1 win over Georgia State (18-35, 7-17 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga. Now they look forward to their first conference tournament appearance in the new conference and first post-season run since 2019.
Georgia State would start firing in the first inning Emily Brown singled to center field and made her way home after stealing second when Jaycee Goodwin doubled to center field.
The Golden Eagle response came shortly after in the second Scout Jennings was able to reach first on a fielder's choice while Maria Smith was thrown out at second after her walk, and Jennings advanced to second on a throwing error. Due to another Georgia State fielding error, Kinsley Gordon reached first, and Scout Jennings could score to tie the game. They would keep the bats hot in the third. Borden had a walk, and Natalie Taylor singled to the left side, moving Borden up to second. Natalie Hurdle then entered as a pinch runner. Taylor reached second base on a single from Jana Lee, and Hurdle moved up to third, then home on a sacrifice fly from Maria Smith to center field.
Georgia State was given few opportunities to pass the Golden Eagles with four hits allowed, no walks given, and 11 batters retired; Morgan Leinstock earned her 13th victory of the 2023 campaign. She nearly matched her season-high 12 strikeouts against Kennesaw State in March at the I-75 Challenge in Atlanta.
