HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Tanner Hall (Zachary, La.) captured the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday following an outstanding performance last Thursday night in his final regular-season start of the year at home against Louisiana.
Hall threw eight scoreless innings against one of the toughest offensive lineups in the league in the Ragin' Cajuns. He allowed three hits and walked one while fanning 12 Cajuns. It was the first shutout of UL this season and the first one against them since the Golden Eagles blanked them last season on March 5.
After allowing a leadoff double to open the second, Hall then retired 16 batters in a row before surrendering a one-out walk in the seventh. He also gave up back-to-back singles with one out in the eighth but got a ground out and a strikeout on his career high 114th pitch to end the threat.
Hall, who improved to 11-3 with the victory, then finished his night's activities by taking a curtain call after that final out in the eighth by the Golden Eagle faithful.
His season win total ranks tied for second on the school career charts, while moving into sixth place in career strikeouts with 278, leaping over Walker Powell (275), Nick Sandlin (268), Frankie McLendon (267) and Ray Guy (266). He finished Sun Belt play with a 9-1 record this season.
The junior was the only Sun Belt pitcher to win the award three times during the year and the Golden Eagles earned the accolade a total of five times, while no other league school tallied more than two. For Hall it was his fifth weekly honor of his career.
