HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) saved his best for last by shooting a final-round 73 at the NCAA Auburn Regional Wednesday in Auburn, Ala., to hold down a 43rd-place tie.
The event was played at the par 72, 7,560-yard Auburn University Club, and Clarke did not advance to the national championship event set for Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26-31.
After shooting a 77 in each of his first two rounds, Clarke finished with a one-over par over his last 18 holes to end the 54-hole with a plus-11, 227-stroke total.
Clarke bogeyed two of his first five holes to start that final round, before collecting a birdie on hole No. 6. After bogeying the final hole on the front nine, Clarke then put together six-straight par holes before registering a birdie on both No. 16 and No. 17. He just missed par for the round by bogeying the final hole of the tournament.
He finished his year with a season stroke average of 71.47, which ranks as the lowest season stroke total in school history. His 21 rounds of par or better also became a school record, while his 36 rounds for the year tie him for second on the most played in a season along with Justin Emil and Shane Rushing who both accomplished that feat during the 2002-03 season.
Host Auburn carded an even par 288 over the final round to win the team title at the regional, finishing with a one-under 863 team score.
