HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) shot a Southern Miss low first round and junior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) was enjoying a solid second circuit when play was suspended Monday evening following the first day of the Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, Miss.
Being played at the par 72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Club, the tournament started two hours late Monday morning due to the condition of the course.
The field features nine teams that rank in the GolfStat.com Top 50 nationally, including No. 4 Auburn and No. 15 Tennessee, who were tied in the team race when play was suspended at 7:15 p.m.
In the opening round, 13 of the 18-team field shot below par team scores including the Golden Eagles who posted a three-under 285 which put them in 12th place.
"Soft conditions will always yield low scores," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Especially when you have an elite field like this, these kids will light it up. We didn't play any bad golf today. Just didn't take advantage of soft conditions. We have about five or six holes remaining in our second round.
"Hopefully we can finish strong tomorrow and get hot in round three. We have an opportunity to pick up a few quality wins, which we certainly need in this point of the season."
Dupuy put together the team's best score with a two-under 70 over the opening round that put him in 28th-place. Latter added a 71, before putting together a four-under circuit with several holes left in the second round.
Both Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) fired first-round even-par 72s, while Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) shot a 74 over his first 18 holes.
The action continues at 8 a.m., Tuesday morning with the completion of the second round, before starting the final circuit to end the event.
