HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss Softball team (20-20, 4-14 Sun Belt) opens their last home series with a 10-5 loss against South Alabama (33-13, 15-4 Sun Belt) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex Friday night. Hannah Borden records a career-high of three runs in a single game for five RBIs.
Hannah Borden came into tonight's game firing in the bottom of the second as she launched a two-run homer over the center field wall for her seventh of the year scoring Allen.Nealy McManuslater singled to left field on a 1-1 count in the bottom of the third, and Borden would send another two-run home run over the wall in the bottom of the third. After trailing behind the Golden Eagles in the first three innings, the Jaguars would retaliate in the top of the fourth when right fielder Victoria Ortiz sent a two-run homer. Two more Jags get on but cannot score with one ground out to catcher and two to third base.
In the top of the fifth, South Alabama loaded three with two singles and a walk. First baseman Gabby Stagner sent a grand slam out of the park to push past the Golden Eagles 6-4. They would score one more in the fifth after second baseman Odalys Cordova stole third and then scored on an error.
Back-to-back triples from the Jags on a 1-0 count in the top of the sixth from Marley Sims and Meredith Keel helped the Jags add some insurance runs to the board.
Borden homered for her third of the game in the bottom of the sixth to replace the complex individual record and marked the first opponent to hit three home runs against South Alabama. The Golden Eagles tried to rally in the seventh as Mcmanus struck out swinging but got to first on a throwing error, and Allen singled to left field on the first pitch; Borden was up to bat and made it to first on a fielder's choice, but Allen got out at second for the third out to end the game.
Morgan Leinstock(11-13) started in the circle and, in four innings of work, struck out three and issued one walk before
Paige Kilgorecame in to finish the game allowing three walks and five hits.
Saturday's matchup is scheduled for noon, pushed up two hours from the original time slated due to weather.
