PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- South Alabama (16-7, 7-1 Sun Belt) shutout the Southern Miss (8-15, 1-6 Sun Belt) men's tennis team on Thursday afternoon to conclude its run at the Sun Belt Tournament in Peachtree City, Ga. The top-seeded Jaguars advanced to the semifinals with a 4-0 win over the eighth-seeded Golden Eagles.
"Credit to South Alabama for the way they played today," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I am so proud of the guys for how they played this week. It's hard to see our three seniors leave after today, but I think we have a good group coming in that will take us to the next level."
Southern Miss' season came to an end a day after it knocked off ninth-seeded Coastal Carolina for its first postseason win since the 2018 season. The Golden Eagles opened today with a tough draw in doubles, which featured a pair of All-Sun Belt Teams -- Jack Clements/Louis Delcour and Sebastian Collard/Martin Bugaj. Although those two pairs were split up during today's match, South Alabama made quick work in doubles play.
Javier Montoya and Delcour picked up the first win for the Jaguars as they beat Alan Sanson and Pawin Jirapoomadje, 6-3. They secured the doubles point five minutes later after Maxime St-Hilaire and Clements beat Shamirul Shahril and Dakotah Bobo, 6-3. Saheb Sodhi and Antoine Audrain went unfinished on court two.
With a 1-0 lead in tow, South Alabama swept three singles matches to secure the win. Shahril, Sodhi and Jirapoomdaje all fell in singles matches. Olimjon Nabiev, Pasawee Reansuwong and Sanson went unfinished in their matches.
The Golden Eagles ended their season with an 8-15 mark in Engineer's 10th season at the helm. Nabiev posted a team-high nine wins, while three other Golden Eagles had seven wins. Alexander Gima and Sanson paved the way for Southern Miss in doubles play with a team-best 7-3 record.
