Men's Tennis Secures Massive Win at Sun Belt Tournament

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Pasawee Reansuwong played hero on Wednesday afternoon as he sealed a first-round win for the Southern Miss (8-14, 1-6 Sun Belt) men's tennis team at the Sun Belt Tournament. The ninth-seeded Golden Eagles outlasted ninth-seeded Coastal Carolina ( via a 5-2 score at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga.
"What a match," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I am so proud of the way we fought after losing the doubles point. It's always a great feeling when you can avenge a loss from earlier in the season and it's even sweeter when it's in the postseason."
The Golden Eagles fell behind early as Coastal Carolina took the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Alan Sanson and Pawin Jirapoomdaje lost on court three, while Shamirul Shahril and Pasawee Reansuwong won on court two to set up a winner-take-all match on court one. Unfortunately, Antoine Audrain and Saheb Sodhi fell in a tiebreaker to Lucas Wayenburg and Steve Mundt to give Coastal Carolina the point.
Jirapoomdaje made up for the doubles loss by making quick work of Neil O'Conner on court five. The Thailand native cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win to even the match at one-all. Sanson then upped the Golden Eagle advantage with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court two. Coastal Carolina answered back with a 6-4, 6-2 win as Ryuya Ata knocked off Olimjon Nabiev.
Tied at two, Sodhi delivered a massive three-set win on court four to swing the lead back to Southern Miss' side. The freshman beat Guilherme Toresan, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. With Southern Miss up, Reansuwong delivered the dagger with another three-set win to give the Golden Eagles the instant classic victory. The sophomore rallied from a loss in the first set to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. With the match already sealed thanks to Reansuwong's win, Shahril added another point to the scoreboard with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on court one.
Southern Miss' win was the first postseason win for the program since the 2018 season. The Golden Eagles will now play No. 1 South Alabama at 1 p.m. CST on Thursday.
