HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (7-14, 1-6 SBC) men's tennis team is set to take on eighth-seeded Coastal Carolina (10-12, 1-7 SBC) on Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The ninth-seeded Golden Eagles and Chanticleers meet in Peachtree City, Ga. at the Peachtree City Tennis Center at 1 p.m. CST.
"We're matched up with a great program in our first round of the tournament," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We had a tough match against them last month and I thought we had a chance to beat them on the road. We're going to work through some small details and get ready to go in Georgia."
Southern Miss is coming off a tough Georgia swing after dropping matches at Georgia Southern and Georgia State last weekend. Despite coming out on the wrong end, the Golden Eagles took home the doubles point in both matches -- it was the 11th doubles point for them this season.
Olimjon Nabiev posted a team-high nine wins during the regular season, while Antoine Audrain was second on the team in wins with seven. Dakotah Bobo, Saheb Sodhi and Alan Sanson all had six wins. In doubles play, Sanson and Alexander Gima led the team in wins with seven. Three other doubles teams had at least four wins through 21 matches.
Wednesday's meeting marks the second time Southern Miss and Coastal Carolina meet this season. Back on March 16, the Chanticleers took a 5-2 decision over the Golden Eagles in Conway. They got two points thanks to singles wins from Shamirul Shahril and Sanson.
