HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior right-hander Tanner Hall (Zachary, La.) garnered the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors released Tuesday by the league office.
Hall threw the series opener last Thursday at Old Dominion and limited one of the top hitting teams in the league to a run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings for a win, which also gave Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry his 500th career victory.
After running into trouble with two singles and a hit batter in the first, Hall got a flyout to end his only jam of the day against the Monarchs. He allowed a single to open the second and did not surrender another hit until giving up a home run with one out in the eighth.
Following that second-inning leadoff single, Hall gave up one more base runner - a leadoff walk to open the fourth that was eventually erased on an inning-ending double play. The double play started a stretch of 11 retired in a row before allowing the home run. Hall has now won his last four starts and improved to 6-2 on the season.
For the season, Hall has thrown a team-best 49 2/3 innings and holds a team-low 1.99 earned run average with 47 strikeouts and only 15 walks.
The award is the first for Hall this year and his third career weekly award, after capturing it twice from Conference USA last season. Hall's award also gives the Golden Eagles their third weekly pitcher award in 2023, with Matt Adams and Niko Mazza already receiving the accolade.
Southern Miss returns to action this evening when they travel to Tuscaloosa for a 6 p.m. contest against Alabama. The game can be seen on SECN+ and also be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
