Softball Loses Hitting Battle Against Southeastern

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (15-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) lost a 7-1 decision to Southeastern Louisiana (19-2, 0-0 Southland) tonight after a two-hour rain delay at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Golden Eagles put only four hits on the board, dropping to five losses.Â
In the top of the first, the Lions tried to position themselves for success when Cam Goodman singled up the middle. However, as she advanced to second, she was caught stealing. This was followed by two batters being cleared from the batter's box, a line out to Morgan Leinstock, and a strikeout looking.
Thanks to Maria Smith's 25th walk of the season, who quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch, and designated pitcher Jana Lee's single out to left field, the Golden Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first.
The final hitter to the plate would foul out to the catcher in the bottom of the fourth, offsetting the value of Natalie Taylor's double.
After Cam Goodman singled down the left field line, the Lions could score again courtesy of a triple by Ka'Lyn Watson. Here, Jana Lee would take over for Morgan Leinstock. Once Goodman reached third base on Rayner's single and got home on a throwing error, the Lions' top of the fifth inning scoring ended, but they didn't show any mercy as they added another run in the sixth by a pinch-runner.
The Lions loaded the bases twice in the top of the seventh but only pushed across one run.Â
The last hope came when Caroline Worrell would bunt to reach first in the bottom of the seventh and advanced on a wild pitch, but pinch hitter Riley Stephens grounded out to shortstop, leaving Worrell stranded.
