HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (15-6, 0-0 Sun Belt) fell 9-1 in five innings against Ole Miss (14-11, 0-3 SEC) Wednesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.Â
Ole Miss struck first when left-fielder Tate Whitley was up to bat, made her way around the diamond, and got home with a walk, a wild pitch, and then a fielding error.Â
The Golden Eagles' defense came up against bases loaded, a 0-1 count, and two outs in the top of the second. Whitley and first baseman Paige Smith would score on a single up the middle by Mya Stevenson. To extend the Land shark lead, a double to left center from designated player Aynslie Furbush drove the runner on second home.Â
In the bottom of the third, Jana Lee hit a single up the middle, moving Lorna Agren to second and Hannah Borden to third for the Golden Eagles' long run.
Right fielder Mya Stevenson would bring her fourth batter home when she doubled to center field for Jalia Lassiter and Whitley to cross home. Keila Kamoku's double to right field ensured the Rebels added three in the top of the fourth. Soon after, Kamoku stole third and scored to raise the margin to 8-1. Furbush advanced to third, and Savana Sikes scored thanks to Smith's sac, which she delivered on a fielder's choice. The Rebel scoring would be finished after these five runs.
Morgan Leinstock (8-5); Jana Lee replaced her in the top of the third, and Paige Kilgore followed her in the top of the fourth.
Despite the loss, The Southern Miss Softball Complex hosted the third-largest crowd in program history.Â
