HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-- The Southern Miss softball team (15-12, 0-6 Sun Belt) was ousted 4-0 against Marshall (27-3, 4-0 Sun Belt) to wrap up the three-game series in Huntington, W.Va., on Sunday.Â
The bases were loaded for the Herd with one out in the bottom of the second after a walk and two singles; they were able to walk in a run. The second out came from a ground ball fielder's choice to Maria Smith, who turned the bases loaded force out at home to avoid a two-run lead. Marshall shortstop Sydney Bickel hit a line drive to left field but was called out on appeal after it was determined she made contact with the ball outside of the batter's box.Â
In the bottom of the fourth, the Thundering Herd loaded the bases once more and brought Alex Coleman in on a fielding error before walking one in.
In the top of the fifth, the Thundering Herd would strand two Golden Eagles on second and third Maddie Moody pinch-hit for Nealy McManus and got to first with a walk. Mcmanus would reinter and make it to third base with Hanna Borden's single and advancement on the throw. Agren would give the third out when she struck out swinging.Â
Marshall would add to their lead in the fifth as Lauren Love made her way around the diamond from her single to center field and Brooklyn Ulrich's double to center. She would finally reach home when Coleman would ground out to second base.Â
With two outs, Maria Smith would drive a single to left field in the top of the seventh, and Hannah Borden would get to first on a walk to give hope for the Golden Eagles with two on and two off. Shelby Allen would come in for Borden to pinch run, and Kinsley Gordon would come in for batter Agren but would line out to third to close the contest.Â
Morgan Leinstock (8-9) took the loss after giving up seven hits and six walks. Notably, Jana Lee went 3-2 at the plate, recording two of the Golden Eagles' four hits.Â
