HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-- In Saturday's doubleheader, Marshall (26-3, 3-0 Sun Belt) defeated Southern Miss (15-11, 0-5 Sun Belt) by scores of 4-0 and 17-9.Â
With their two victories, Marshall extended their 16-game winning streak and increased their overall series advantage to 21-15.
How it happenedÂ
Game one: Marshall 4, Southern Miss 0
- The Thundering Herd broke the scoring stalemate in the bottom of the fourth when first baseman Rielly Lucas singled to shortstop for runner Grace Chelemen on third to score with a 3-1 count.
- Marshall got ahead by four when third baseman Camryn Michallas fires a three-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth.
- Jana Lee recorded the lone hit for the Golden Eagles in the top of the fourth when she singled to center field with two off but was unable to capitalize after Natalie Taylor grounded out to second base.
- Morgan Leinstock (8-8) recorded the loss for game one allowing five hits and four walks.Â
Game two: Marshall 17, Southern Miss 9 (6 inn.)Â
- The Herd came out swinging and scored twice in the bottom of the first inning after Autumn Owen got to first on a walk, and center fielder Grace Chelemen doubled to right field to bring her home. Shortly after, Bub Feringa singled to left field to drive Chelemen home.Â
- The Golden Eagles were able to respond in the top of the second when freshman Paris Ferguson came up to bat and sent a double to left field. Alexis Dittmer would SAC bunt and reach first on a fielding error to bring Ferguson home.Â
- Right fielder Lauren Love would homer to left-center in the bottom of the second on the first pitch to push the Herd lead 3-1.Â
- Southern Miss would then get ahead of Marshall and score three in the top of the third after, with two runners on and no outs, Jana Lee would single to left field to bring Borden home, and Natalie Taylor would single to right field bringing Lee and Agren home.Â
- Both teams would teeter the lead; unfortunately, the Thundering Herd would walk away victorious, totaling 14 runs to the Golden Eagles' five in the next three innings, forcing a run rule.Â
- Paige Kilgore (4-0) started the game for the Golden Eagles and was tagged for six runs and four hits, striking out three before giving way to Jana Lee (3-3), who pitched 1.2 innings, allowing seven runs and eight hits.Â
