Hattiesburg, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (6-8, 0-1 Sun Belt) men's tennis team takes on South Alabama (9-6, 2-0 Sun Belt) in its Sun Belt home opener on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. Sunday's previously scheduled match against Troy has been postponed due to inclement weather predicted in the Pine Belt area.
"While we won't get two matches in this weekend, the guys are excited to bring Sun Belt tennis to Hattiesburg," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "South Alabama is a great program and they're not going to make it easy. We've had a handful of guys playing well and we'll need that to continue if we want to come out on the right side."
Southern Miss is trying to halt a three-game skid after falling 5-2 at Coastal Carolina last Thursday. Alan Sanson improved to 6-4 and Shamirul Shahril notched his fifth win of the year to move to 5-6, grabbing the only singles wins of the day.
Olimjon Nabiev stills holds the most wins for Southern Miss at eight, but Shahril is hot on his trail coming in on a two-game win streak. Shahril has four of his five wins coming on court two, and eight of Southern Miss' 10 players have recorded at least three wins.
South Alabama comes into this weekend winners of three of their last five, including a 2-0 start in Sun Belt action after beating Old Dominion (4-3) and James Madison (7-0). Martin Bugaj and Maxime St-Hilaire are the leaders of the Jaguars' pack with a records of 11-2 and 11-4. South Alabama has three more players with at least five wins this season in singles play. In doubles action the team of Bugaj and Sebastien Collard lead the way with an undefeated 4-0 record. The Jaguars are 51-35 in singles and 23-16 in doubles overall this season.
