
Southern Miss Softball Falls to No. 23 Louisiana

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (15-8, 0-2 Sun Belt) dropped a conference doubleheader against No.23 Louisiana (20-9, 2-0 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.Â
Louisiana extends their all-time series lead 47-5, recording their first win in Hattiesburg since 2016.Â
Game one: Louisiana 8, Southern Miss 4Â
- Stormy Kotzelnick would ground out to second base, and Karly Heath would reach home to break into the scoring column in the top of the second.Â
- Maria Smith singled to left field with the bases loaded to score two additional runners. In a stirring second inning, Lorna Agren then hit through the right side to score the fourth Golden Eagle.
- The first hit from the Cajuns came at the top of the fourth from left fielder Maddie Hayden.Â
- In the top of the fourth, bases were loaded with no outs. Lauren Allred walked for Karly Heath to advance to second; Alexa Langeliers advanced to third for Maddie Hayden to score. Stormy Kotzelnick would then single to right field and advance to second on the throw while Allred advanced to third and Alexa Langeliers scored. Allred would conclude the scoring in the fourth when she ran home on a passed ball.Â
- Lorna Agren singled in the bottom of the fifth and then stole second, going 11-11 for the year.Â
- Langeliers doubled to left center for Davis to score and push the Louisiana lead, and then Heath tripled to right center for Langeliers to reach home.Â
- Allred would single through the right side for Heath to score to cap the Ragin' Cajun scoring.Â
Game two: Louisiana 12, Southern Miss 1 (6 inn.)
- Southern Miss had a leadoff walk by Maria Smith, who stole second after Hannah Borden's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the first.Â
- The Cajuns got ahead when Karly Heath homered to right center in the top of the second.Â
- Louisiana would score again when Sophie Piskos homered to left field, bringing Stormy Kotzelnick home for a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.Â
- Sophie Piskos singled down the right field line to bring Langeliers home 4-0 in the top of the third.Â
- The Golden Eagles would get on the board in the bottom of the third when Jana Lee singled to right center to drive Maria Smith home.Â
- Pinch hitter Samantha Graeter singled to left field, bringing a runner home, and the Cajuns would add three more runs after Jourdyn Campbell doubled down the left field line.Â
- Kayla Falterman singled down the left-field line to drive a runner home in the top of the sixth.Â
- With bases loaded and one out, Kylei Griffin singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw, while Piskos advanced to third; Falterman scored as well as Allred. Mihyia Davis grounded out to first base as Griffin advanced to third for Piskos to finish the scoring.
