HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (15-9, 0-3 Sun Belt) was defeated 2-10 in six innings by No. 23 Louisiana (21-9, 3-0 Sun Belt) to close the three-game series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex on Sunday.
Pitcher Karly Heath hit a solo home run to center field as the second batter up to quickly get the Cajuns on the board.
After Caroline Worrell walked to start the bottom of the second, Paris Ferguson singled to left field to put two runners on base. However, Kinsley Gordon grounded out to the pitcher, leaving two runners stranded.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles issued back-to-back walks, putting runners on first and second. The runners then advanced after Caroline Worrell grounded out to first base. After Paris Ferguson singled through the left side, Natalie Taylor could move up to third, and pinch-runner Scout Jennings could find the equalizer. Unfortunately, Southern Miss runners would be left stranded on the corners after Cajun relief pitcher Kandra Lamb forced Kinsley Gordon to leave the batter's box swinging.Â
Hannah Borden doubled down the left field line for Shelby Allen to get home and put the Golden Eagles ahead by one score in the bottom of the fifth.Â
An eventful second inning when a catcher interference loaded the bases with no outs for the Ragin Cajuns. As Campbell hit to right field and Langeliers and Graeter were able to score, Louisiana took the lead once more. After the run scored with no outs, the bases were loaded a second time. Falterman scored another run with a single to left field. Now, Morgan Leinstock would be replaced by Jana Lee, and soon after, the Cajuns would score two more runs—the first on a fielding mistake and the second on a walk. Four more Cajuns would be added to the scoring for the sixth inning with two more singles from Piskos and Allred. Louisiana found themselves in the lead by ten after entering the sixth with a one-point deficit.
When Worrell singled and advanced to first base, the Golden Eagles attempted to strike back, but the following two batters struck out to cut the game short.Â
The loss was given to Morgan Leinstock (8-7), who pitched five innings before being relieved in the sixth by Jana Lee (3-2).
