Women's Golf Leads Tchefuncta Invitational After Record Round

COVINGTON, La. --Â Behind the fifth-lowest round in school history, the Southern Miss women's golf team is in first place after the first day of play at the Tchefuncta Invitational in Covington, La. The Golden Eagles fired a 287 in their second round at Tchefuncta Country Club.Â
Southern Miss' 287 is tied for the fifth-lowest single round score in program history. It's the lowest score recorded since a 284 at the Lady Red Wolves Classic in the Fall of 2021. The Golden Eagles were paced by sophomore Momoka Ando's third-place finish through 36 holes. Ando fired back-to-back even par 71's to lead the team. Elena Melich finished right on the heels of Ando, sitting in fourth place after a one-under 71 during the second round.Â
Sophomore Jacee Fields joined Ando and Melich in the top-10 with a one-over 72 and a three-over 74. The Fort Worth, Texas native is tied for sixth heading into Tuesday's final round. Fernanda Gorostiaga is tied for 16th after a one-over 72 during the second round. Merche Corbacho rounded out the team result with a four-over 75 in Monday's second round and is 36th. Â
Playing as an individual, Taylor Trible fired a three-over 74 in her opening round and followed with an 80 to sit in 22nd after Monday. Southern Miss posted a team-high 23 birdies over the first two rounds, including six from Ando. Fields and Melich each posted five birdies.Â
Southern Miss will tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning as it looks to pick up its second win of the season. The Golden Eagles won the Hoover Classic in September, while Ando placed second in that tournament.Â
