HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) opened their 2023 season with the annual Black & Gold Invitational. The Golden Eagles faced off with Seton Hall (0-2, 0-0 Big East) for the first time in program history with a scoreless tie up until the ninth inning as Natalie Poole grabbed her first win as head coach against the Pirates 2-1.Â
"Really happy to get the win tonight! The team fought well all the way until the end. This was a true team win," said head Coach Natalie Poole.
On the offense returner, in the bottom of the fifth, Lorna Agren doubled to left field for her second career base hit. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize on this opportunity when Hannah Borden's bomb flew out to left field to Pirate Lauren Caye.Â
The Pirates recorded the game's first run in the top of the ninth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Seton Hall catcher Erin Howard singled to right field, registering the first RBI of the game leading Taylor Soanes to score.
Southern Miss struck back in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game 1-1 as freshman Kinsely Gordon's first collegiate hit beat the infield shift via a single RBI through the middle of the Black & Gold infield to bring sophomore Natalie Taylor home.
To close out the night, with the 2-1 score, junior Maria Smith, with bases loaded, walked on a 3-1 count advancing McManus to second, Worrell to third, and freshman Shelby Allen to home for her first collegiate run as a Golden Eagle.Â
Senior pitcher Morgan Leinstock recorded the 25th win of her Golden Eagle career and her 31st complete game with 11 strikeouts while allowing just one run.Â
