HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team takes to the road for the final time in 2023 when they travel to in-state foe Mississippi State for an 11 a.m., game, Saturday, Nov. 18, at Davis-Wade Stadium at Scott Field.
The game can be seen via SEC+/ESPN+, and heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as online here.
This meeting marks the 31st between the schools in football with the Bulldogs holding a 15-14-1 advantage. The Golden Eagles (3-7) look to snap a five-game losing streak to MSU as they meet for the first time since a 38-15 setback in Starkville in 2019. Southern Miss is 6-10-1 in games played in Starkville.
Southern Miss heads to Starkville with a two-game winning streak, after defeating ULM, 24-7, and Louisiana, 34-31, in overtime the last two weeks. MSU enters the game having dropped its last three games including a 51-10 setback last weekend at Texas A&M. The school made a coaching change and is currently under the direction of interim coach Greg Knox.
Heading into this contest, the Golden Eagles will look to Frank Gore, Jr., to continue to be their top offensive weapon. Gore, Jr., who has three-straight 100-yard rushing games and five total for the season, needs just 30 yards to become only the fifth Golden Eagle rusher to get to 1,000 yards for a season in multiple years. The Miami, Fla., product has 970 yards on 196 carries for a 4.9 yards per carry average. His nine rushing scores are the most since he collected the same amount last season.
Gore, Jr., ranks third at the school in career rushing yards with 3,861, trailing Damion Fletcher (5,302) and Ito Smith (4,538).
Billy Wiles has opened in the first 10 games at quarterback for the Golden Eagles and thrown for 1,851 yards and 10 touchdowns with six interceptions. His top three targets for 2023 include Latreal Jones with 34 catches for 480 yards, along with Ti Mims who also has 34 catches and 395 receiving yards. Jakarius Caston has a team-best 518 receiving yards on 30 catches.
On defense, MSU transfer Dylan Lawrence continues to lead the Golden Eagles in tackles with 65, while Jay Stanley is next 48 to go along with a team-best tying three interceptions and a fumble recovery. The linebacker duo Swayze Bozeman and Hayes Maples enjoys 45 and 38 stops, respectively, while defensive lineman Quetin Bivens leads the front guys in tackles with 29.
This is the latest the Golden Eagles have played a non-conference game since finishing up the 2007 regular season with a 16-10 home victory over Arkansas State.
Following the MSU trip, Southern Miss finishes is 2023 season with a Saturday, Nov. 25, contest with Troy. The game starts at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
