Volleyball Opens Sun Belt Conference Tournament Thursday Against Marshall

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Volleyball (12-15, 7-9 Sun Belt) begins play in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament against Marshall (12-18, 4-12 Sun Belt) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Foley Sports Complex in Foley, Ala.
The Golden Eagles concluded the regular season with a 3-1 win against Old Dominion, securing the fourth seed in the West Division and a first-round bye in the conference tournament with an overall 7-9 mark in conference play.
After dropping the first match to the Monarchs on Friday, Southern Miss fired a season-high 65 kills with standout performances from its seniors on Senior Day in the Wellness Center to split the series.
Mia Wesley finished the season on a hot streak, recording 22 kills on a .309 clip in the Golden Eagles' win. The Sun Belt Conference named the Orem, Utah native Second Team All-Sun Belt after she finished the season with 364 kills and a conference-high 55 service aces.
Wesley reached 1,371 career kills in the Black and Gold, which ranks sixth in program history, and trails Shalini Job's career total by 38 kills. She also needs 43 more digs to reach the 1,000-career dig milestone.
Libero Megan Harris also continued her high-level performance on defense, finishing the regular season with a conference-high five digs per set for 285 digs in conference play and a total of 418 digs on the season.
Marshall finished the season with a 12-18 record and a 4-12 standing in the Sun Belt. The Herd slumped on a six-game losing streak to end the season, including series losses against Coastal Carolina, James Madison and Arkansas State.
Middle blocker Essence Clerkley earned Second-Team All-Sun Belt honors after posting 221 kills and 87 total blocks. The Herd had three players with 200 or more kills, including Lydia Montague's team-leading 261 kills. Montague also leads the team with 109 total blocks.
Southern Miss has split 24 matches all-time against Marshall, with the Golden Eagles winning the last six of seven meetings.
This will be the first meeting since Marshall won against Southern Miss in the Conference-USA in 2019, and only the second time the programs have met in tournament play. The Herd won against Southern Miss in the opening round of the 2008 Conference USA Volleyball Tournament.
The winner advances to play Texas State, the West Division's first seed, on Friday at 7 p.m. Southern Miss looks for its first appearance in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Volleyball Championship Tournament and its first quarterfinals match in a conference tournament since 2018.
