LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss (1-0) made a splash in its first game of the year, running out to a 30-point advantage after a 55-point first half. Ten different Lady Eagles made an entry in the scorebook, led by Domonique Davis' (DeRidder, La.) 23 points. The game marked the 20th 20-point game in her career and pushed her over 1,000 career points.
The Lady Eagles used an efficient 51.6 field goal percentage to put the game out of reach for William Carey and cruised to an 88-46 win on Education Day. Sieper is the first true freshman to do so since 2020-21.
Other Lady Eagles to make their Southern Miss debuts were freshmen Elle Blatchford (Canton, Ga.) and Mikaylah Manley and transfers Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) and Mahoganie Williams (Monroe, La.).
STORYLINES
Domonique Davis sits at 980 points as a Lady Eagle, needing an average scoring performance from her to push her into the Southern Miss 1,000-point club. As the 30th member of the exclusive club, Davis has the potential to shoot all the way to the top 10.
Southern Miss' depth was on display on Monday as the bench scored 33 points, led by Noelani Cornfield's (Gowanda, N.Y.) 10. The Lady Eagles' newcomers are by no means inexperienced and come to each game with an excellent shooting ability.
SCOUTING AKRON
The Zips (0-1) fell 91-87 in two overtimes in their season opener to Oakland (1-1). Reagan Bass posted a 33-point, 13-board double-double to lead the Zips in both categories. She was joined by fellow starters Morgan Haney and Alexus Mobley as one of three double-figure scorers.
The back-and-forth game went to OT thanks to Akron's 24-point fourth quarter. Despite losing, Akron still shot 41.4 percent from the floor (29-of-71) but allowed Oakland to finished 32-of-69 (46.4 percent). Interestingly, the Zips collected just five steals but were able to force 20 Oakland turnovers. They also dished out 18 assists on the evening.
