Soccer Falls 1-0 to Georgia State in Round One of the SBC Tournament

FOLEY, Ala.-- The Southern Miss Soccer team (6-9-3, 3-4-3 SBC) faced off against Georgia State (9-4-6, 4-3-3 SBC) in round one of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, ending in a 1-0 defeat for the Golden Eagles.
Despite a promising start and several close attempts to score, it was Georgia State's Olivia Shaw who secured the winning goal in the 74th minute off a cross from Elena Diaz.
The game's early moments saw the Golden Eagles dominating possession, with Chloe Taylor and Shaelynn Quick making notable attempts at the goal, all of which were skillfully denied by the Georgia State keeper. Southern Miss limited Georgia State's opportunities while producing a series of shots, maintaining a 3-0 lead in the shot count by the 30th minute.
Adaira Nakano's ambitious shot in the 39th minute narrowly missed the target, leaving the first half deadlocked at 0-0. Despite their efforts, the Golden Eagles struggled to convert their shots into goals. This defeat marked the fourth consecutive post-season elimination for Southern Miss, being held scoreless.
Reflecting on the 2023 Season, the Golden Eagles concluded with a 6-9-3 overall record and a 3-4-3 standing in conference play. Junior Adaira Nakano emerged as a key offensive force, tallying seven goals, four assists, and 18 points, contributing three game-winning goals and earning recognition as the SBC offensive player of the week once during the year.
Additionally, the freshman squad comprising of Abby Badurak, Chloe Taylor, Rebekah Vega, and Parker Martin played a pivotal role, collectively contributing to 10 of the team's 25 goals. Notably, Badurak secured her first collegiate goal, serving as the game-winner in one of the matches.
