Men's Tennis Has Strong Weekend at CCB Collegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team closed out its fall tournament schedule with nine wins at the CCB Collegiate Invitational at the Country Club of Birmingham. The Golden Eagles enjoyed a solid weekend from freshman Rasmus Becker, who went on to win the consolation side of the Bulldog Singles bracket.

"We took a smaller group this weekend and I thought they rose to the challenge against very good competition," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "Fall tennis is over now and we'll get back to the practice courts to get ready for the regular season that starts in January."

Becker dropped his opening match to South Alabama's Theo Mottier, but then rattled off back-to-back wins against Juan Diego Rojas (Charleston) and Benji Jacobsen (Tulane) -- both in three sets. Becker then matched up with teammate Pasawee Reansuwong in the consolation finals, though the match was declared a not contest. Reansuwong made his way to the finals in similar fashion, dropping his first set to Iker Dellien Velasco (UAB) before beating Jordy Larke (Charleston) and JB Pickard (Samford).

Shamirul Shahril dropped his first two matches in the Blue Singles bracket, losing to Alabama State's David Jeanne Grandinot and Georgia State's Edward Tymes. Shahril then beat North Alabama's Alberto Artur in straight sets and followed with a sweep of UAB's Vojtech Podzemny. Henry Lamchinniah dropped all three of his matches in the Red Singles bracket.

in doubles play, Shahril and Reansuwong knocked off Washington's top doubles pair via a 6-4 score. Despite the impressive win, the pair went on to lose their next two matches. Lamchinniah and Becker fell in all three doubles matches they played.
