HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (1-1, 0-0 SBC) men's tennis team will host Jackson State Saturday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex to open the 2023 home slate of matches. Admission to the match is free.
"We are excited to finally play at home in front of our fans," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We got some work in down in Florida last week and beat Bucknell to help get a little momentum going into tomorrow's match. The new guys are eager to get a home match under their belts, while the returners are ready for another successful season at home."
Southern Miss opened the season in Fort Myers, Fla. last week and returned to Hattiesburg with a win over Bucknell under its belt. Prior to the win over the Bison, the Golden Eagles dropped the season opener to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday. Dakotah Bobo, Olimjon Nabiev, Sahen Sodhi and Pawin Jirapoomdaje each recorded singles wins in the Bucknell victory. Bobo and Sodhi's wins were the first of their Southern Miss career.
Jackson State is coming off a 9-9 campaign that included a 6-1 loss to Southern Miss on March 26, 2022. Shamirul Shahril was the only current Golden Eagle to pick up a singles win in that match. Alexander Gima and Jirapoomdaje had a doubles win along with Shahril and Audrain. The Golden Eagles went 7-4 at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex last season.
