Head coach Joye Lee-McNelis earned her 300th win at the helm of the Lady Eagle program in a 77-57 drubbing of ULM.
Four Lady Eagles finished with double-figure scoring as Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) paced Southern Miss with 14 points on the day.
Femi Funeus (Plantation, Fla. // Seton Hall) grabbed nine boards and Lani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y. // Northwest Florida State) set a career-high with eight assists.
While no individual quarter stood out, Southern Miss slowly put the Warhawks away to roll to its second-straight win by 20 or more.
Noting the Lady Eagles
Southern Miss (12-5) sits at 5-1 in conference play, tying the best start under McNelis, for the first time since 2008-09 and sixth-time in program history.
Coach McNelis made history reaching the 300-win mark, making Southern Miss the sixth program in NCAA women's basketball history to boast two head coaches with 300 or more wins at the DI level.
The Lady Eagles have appeared to struggle offensively this season but that might be attributable to an excellent crop of season opponents.
Six opponents of the Lady Eagles' season have top-100 scoring defenses and four sit within the top 50. Southern Miss ranks at 47th overall with an average of 57.6. UC Irvine gives up an average of 51.2 points per game, the sixth-best mark in the nation.
The Appalachian State Series
Hardly a series, the two squads have only played once before with the Lady Eagles taking a 61-48 win on Dec. 2, 2001 at Reed Green Coliseum.
App State and Southern Miss have not come in contact since then.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State sits at 7-10 overall but holds a 3-3 record in Sun Belt play. The Mountaineers have adjusted to Sun Belt play after a difficult nonconference slate. App State also boasts a 5-2 record in the Holmes Convocation Center this season and finished 9-4 in Boone last year.
Averaging 70.0 points per game, the 105th-best mark in DI, App State should attempt to set the pace with a guard-oriented attack, which could prove to give Southern Miss fits.
Three Mountaineers average double-figure scoring, led by Janay Sanders' 14.5 points per game and followed by Emily Carvers' 11.1 and Faith Alston's 10.0.
Carver also owns the latest Sun Belt Conference player of the week after posting a career-best 22 points at James Madison. She also is second for App in total rebounds with 80.
