HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Despite Austin Crowley's 20-point effort Thursday night, the Southern Miss men's basketball team fell 89-67 to Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.V.
The Golden Eagles were victim to three separate scoring droughts that lasted over two minutes in the first half that ultimately put them down by as many as 15. The Marshall lead dipped to eight by the time the horn sounded at the half.
Mo Arnold willed the Golden Eagles back into the ballgame in the first half after the junior guard accounted for five-straight points to reduce the deficit to 11, then Crowley threw down a dunk to make it a nine-point game with a hair over three minutes left in that first half.
A Crowley heave at the buzzer fell short to produce the eight-point score at the half. The Golden Eagles shot 35.5 percent (11-31) in the first half and knocked down only two of their 11 three-pointers attempted. DeAndre Pinckney and Crowley each hit a deep ball.
Out of the second half, Southern Miss weathered an Andrew Taylor and Taevion Kinsey flurry to then make it a three-point game two different times in the first four minutes of the half. Felipe Haase, who went 1-of-7 in the first half, hit a big three to force a Marshall timeout 120 seconds into the half.
The Thundering Herd answered Southern Miss and went hot to push to the lead to 17 as the clock ticked past 10 minutes. Another Haase three-pointer cut it to 14, but the Herd fought back to make it a 22-point game with five minutes left.
The Southern Miss bench emptied over the final two minutes to see both Trey Alfonso and Tyler Morman score two points.
Southern Miss shot 39.4 percent from the floor over the course of the game and finished with six three-pointers. Marshall was paced by Micah Handlogten's 17 points and 16 rebounds. It also received double-digit scoring from Taevion Kinsey (23), Andrew Taylor (19) and Kamdyn Curfman 17. As a team, the Herd shot 50 percent from the floor and drained eight three-pointers.
Arnold scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. The Picayune product also had three steals on the night. Pinckney finished with eight to snap his seven-game streak of scoring 10-plus points.
Southern Miss pulled down a game-high 42 rebounds, 16 of which were offensive. Denijay Harris posted a team-high nine boards. Pinckney and Haase each had six.
