Betoret Goes Under Par, Golden Eagles Slide into Sixth After Day Two in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. --Â Southern Miss freshman Alma Betoret went under par for the first time in her Golden Eagle career on Sunday during the second round of the USA Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. Betore fired a one-under 71, while the Golden Eagles fired a 289 to slide into sixth.Â
Betoret got hot on the front nine as the Spaniard recorded three birdies in a four-hole span before adding another one on the back nine. She is sitting tied for 29th heading into the final round on Monday morning. Senior Friend Chompitakdacha bounced back on day two to finish even par through 18 holes.Â
Sophomore Momoka Ando remained the highest Golden Eagle on the individual leaderboard after firing a one-over 73 to finish the day tied for 10th. Fernanda Gorostiaga and Jacee Fields each shot a one-over 73 as well on Sunday morning. After bogeying the opening hole, Elena Melich tallied an eagle on the par-five fifth hole. Melich would go on to finish with a four-over 76 and remained tied for 34th ahead of the final round.Â
Host school South Alabama remains in control with a 15-under 561 through 36 holes. Arkansas State, ULM, Memphis, and Western Kentucky round out the top five. The Golden Eagles are seven strokes off of Western Kentucky.Â
Gorostiaga will be the first Golden Eagle out of the clubhouse Monday morning with an 8:45 a.m. tee time. Fields will be the last one out with a 9:30 a.m. tee time.
