Men’s Tennis Picks Up Nine Wins in Southern Miss Fall Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's tennis team wrapped up the Southern Miss Fall Invitational on Sunday afternoon after two days of play. The Golden Eagles picked up nine wins over the two-day event at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. The participants were Tulane, South Alabama, Louisiana, and New Orleans. "I thought we did several things well this weekend against really good competition," said Southern Miss head coach Zubin Engineer. " We have a lot of areas that we need to improve on in the next few weeks of practice before we go to Tuscaloosa for a big ITA Southern Regional event. Southern Miss started Saturday morning strong picking up two doubles wins against New Orleans. Saheb Sodhi/Alexander Gima got the team off to a quick start at No. 2 doubles winning 6-3 and Olimjon Nabiev/ Antoine Audrain followed on court three, winning 7-6. Second doubles with South Alabama on Saturday morning went down to the wire, with all three matches going into tight tiebreakers.
Pasawee Reansuwong picked up the first Southern Miss win on Saturday as the sophomore won 6-2, 7-5 against William Kesterson of Tulane. Against Sun Belt for Louisiana, returners Olimjon Nabiev and Pawin Jirapoomdaje each picked up wins. Nabiev picked up a three-set win against Alejo Ferrer Chueca after coming from behind after losing the first set 6-4. The junior answered back to win the final two sets, 6-2, 7-5. Jirampoodaje won by retirement in the third set as the sophomore held a 1-0 lead in the final frame.
Alexander Gima picked up the two good wins on Sunday in singles play against South Alabama and New Orleans. Gima defeated Javier Montoya via a 6-3, 7-6, 10-7 win on court two. Dakotah Bobo, Antoine Audrain and Shahril competed well in the other three singles matches on Sunday. Taras Ignatiuk defeated Kesterson from Tulane, 6-2, 6-2
The Golden Eagles will head to the ITA Southern Regionals on Oct 13-17 in Tuscaloosa, AL.
