HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Battle for the Bell returns this weekend when Southern Miss travels to New Orleans to renew its football rivalry with Tulane.
Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Yulman Stadium, Saturday, and can be seen on ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield.
Saturday's meeting marks the 33rd game between the two schools in football with the Golden Eagles holding a 23-9 advantage in a series that dating back to 1979. Southern Miss, though, looks to snap a two-game skid to the Green Wave, including a 30-13 setback in the 2020 Armed Forces Bowl, and a 66-24 setback at The Rock during the 2020 regular season.
The Golden Eagles also hold an 11-4 record against the Green Wave in New Orleans, having won their last three meetings there. Southern Miss last played Tulane in the Crescent City, Nov. 6, 2010, posting a 46-10 decision in the Louisiana Superdome. This will the team's first game at Yulman Stadium on the Green Wave campus.
This weekend, Southern Miss meets a hot Green Wave team that has started the season 3-0, including a 17-10 victory at Kansas State last weekend.
Southern Miss freshman quarterback Zach Wilcke is scheduled to earn his third career start, having thrown for 309 yards on 25-of-45 attempts with two touchdowns and one interception.
Frank Gore, Jr., leads the Golden Eagle rushing offense with 270 yards on the ground on 46 carries for a 5.9 yard per carry. He averages 90 yards on the ground per game and has a team-high three rushing scores.
The duo of Jakarius Caston and Jason Brownlee pace the receiving corps. Caston has 12 catches for 171 yards and a pair touchdown grabs, while Brownlee has eight receptions for 157 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Malik Shorts continues to lead the squad in tackles with 28 having posted an interception in two of the first three games. Linebackers Swayze Bozeman and Santrell Latham are next with 16 stops, while Jalen Williams leads Golden Eagle defensive linemen with 14 tackles.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) look to continue their scoring ways after defeating Northwestern State 64-10 at The Rock last weekend, while also trying to collect their sixth contest over the last eight with a defensive touchdown after Bozeman returned a fumble last week 12 yards for a score.
Following the Green Wave contest, Southern Miss enjoys its only open date before beginning its inaugural season in the Sun Belt Conference when they travel to Troy, Oct. 8, in a 6 p.m. contest.
