Women's Basketball Celebrates September as Month of Service

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lady Eagle basketball continues one of its longest traditions – the Month of Service. For almost two decades, Southern Miss women's basketball coaches and staff have spent September giving back to the Greater Hattiesburg Area.
"Lady Eagle basketball prides itself in making a difference in our community," said 19th-year head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We built our program on four pillars – accept, respect, give and love. Our mission as a coaching staff for the Month of Service is three-fold:
We believe in the growth of our young people and that it is our responsibility to become mentors to our children;
We believe in family because we are a family – it is important to us to be able to bring families together to enjoy and learn about Lady Eagle Basketball;
And we believe in the retirement community – the wisest generation in the Hub City. We want to give that group a family away from their own.
I hope that as a Lady Eagle family, we can make a difference in every life we meet. In return, we hope they will attend our games and join our booster club, The WINGS, so they can become our family."
Instituted by McNelis in her first year with the Lady Eagles in 2004, the Month of Service has impacted both the Southern Miss community and the wider Hattiesburg area for over 19 years.
This month, the Lady Eagles have visited the Hattiesburg Warehouse, the Dubard School for Language Disorders, the Salvation Army thrift store and Oak Grove Middle School with plans to visit N.R. Burger Middle School and the Salvation Army thrift store later this week.
