HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team opens its 2022-23 season Sunday when they participate in the 10th annual Jim Rivers Intercollegiate through Tuesday at Squire Creek Country Club and Golf Course in Choudrant, La., and hosted by Louisiana Tech.
The three-day, 54-hole event will take place on the par 72, 7,105-yard course and feature 22 teams.
"This is a tournament our program is very familiar with," said fifth-year Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Each year we have the opportunity to compete in this event and begin our season in Ruston. The course is a fantastic test for collegiate golfers. There are plenty of scoring opportunities with reachable par 5's and a few wedge par 4's. However, the par 3's and green complexes are always a test at Squire. It is always a goal, for any player, to play Squire Creek without any three putts. If you can accomplish that, with halfway decent ball-striking, you should have a solid week."
Joining Southern Miss and host LA Tech in the event, include LSU, UTSA, Houston, SMU, North Texas, Rice, Nicholls, Francis Marion, Oral Roberts, South Alabama, ULM, Louisiana, Abilene Christian, Troy, Middle Tennessee, Lamar, Kennesaw State, High Point, Central Arkansas and Missouri State.
Southern Miss returns junior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario), who posted a single-season school record for lowest scoring average at 71.88. Fellow junior Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) also returns to the lineup after posting a 72.52 scoring average a season ago.
"Our lineup returns three starters from last season with Robbie, Thongpipat, and Ryan (Dupuy)," said Brescher. "All three of these guys are proven all-conference players. The addition of Cameron Clarke is huge for our program. He posted 18 under in six rounds of qualifying, continuing his streak of never shooting over par since reporting to campus in January. Rounding out the line up with Cameron Guidry gives us a solid five-man squad that I feel comfortable with. It's been a while since college golf has been in action. We can't wait to get our season under way this week."
